McGOLDRICK SUPREME
Amberley’s Micah McGoldrick underlined his dominance of both the 125cc and under-21 years’ age group categories with another hat-trick of wins at the fourth and final round of this year’s New Zealand Motocross Championships in Taupo on Sunday.
The 16-year-old Canterbury rider continued his domination of the dual-title class with another unbeatable display on Taupo’s sand and pumice-based course on Sunday afternoon.
McGoldrick (CMR Red Bull KTM 125) had a race up his sleeve at the start of the day at Taupo and, as expected, wrapped up both titles with a race to spare on Sunday.
Rotorua’s Cameron Vaughan (MXDK Yamaha YZ125) finished second, a massive 42 points behind McGoldrick, while Tauranga’s Logan Blackburn (BikesportNZ.com Yamaha YZ125) finished third.
“I knew, when I arrived here today, that I didn’t need to push too hard. I had a good points lead and I just needed to be sensible,” said the mature teenager.
“I had only an average start in the first race and knew I had to be patient. I made my way to the front and managed to stay there. I felt the pressure was on me and I wasn’t really nailing all the corners and ruts. But I kept cool,” said McGoldrick.
“I knew a top-three finish was all I needed in the last race of the day but there’s nothing like winning so I pushed hard and had the reward.”
McGoldrick heads to Australia on Friday where he prepares for the opening round of the Australian Motocross Championships near Brisbane.
McGoldrick will race in the under-19 class in Australia, before heading back to line up for the New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships in April.
